If you've ever had a sore back, a sports injury, or ongoing muscle or joint pain, chances are you've considered seeing either an osteopath or a physiotherapist. But what's the difference between the two? And more importantly, which one should you choose?
The truth is, they're more similar than you might think.

A Common Goal
Both osteopaths and physiotherapists are highly trained professionals who assess, diagnose, treat, and help manage musculoskeletal problems. Whether you're dealing with back pain, a sprained ankle, or any other musculoskeletal issue, both professions aim to help you move and feel better.
The main difference lies in their training backgrounds.
Manual Therapy or Exercise? Not So Black and White

There's a common myth that osteopaths just do manual therapy (like joint manipulation and soft tissue work) and that physiotherapists just give exercises. That might have been true in the past - but not anymore.
These days, many osteopaths integrate exercise and rehabilitation into their treatment plans as their training includes learning about exercise therapy and rehabilitation, and many physiotherapists use manual therapy when it's appropriate.
The truth is, the approach you get depends more on the individual practitioner than on their title.
Some practitioners specialise in a particular type of treatment - manual therapy, rehabilitaion, dry needling, movement training - but most use a mix of methods tailored to each patient's needs.
So... Who Should You See?
Osteopathy vs Physiotherapy, which one should you see? it's a fair question, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. The best choice often depends on:
Your goals and preferences.
The practitioner, more important than the label is finding someone whose approach suits you, and who makes you feel heard and understood.
Availability and access, sometimes the decision simply comes down to who's nearby, has availability, or is recommended by someone you trust.
The Bottom Line
Whether you choose and osteopath or a physiotherapist, you're likely in good hands. What matters most is the individual clinician's skill, experience, and how well their approach aligns with your needs. Don't get too caught up in titles - get the care that feels right for you!
